Why GoToPDF exists
A note from the team
Most document converter sites ask you to upload your file to a server, wait in a queue, sometimes make an account, and hope the file gets deleted afterward. For a document you probably just need converted for five minutes, that's a lot of trust to extend to a stranger's server.
GoToPDF takes the opposite approach: the conversion runs entirely inside your browser tab, using JavaScript libraries that parse your file and lay it out in the new format on your own device — PDF to Word, Word to PDF, PDF to Excel, and more, all in either direction. There's no upload button because there's nothing to upload to. When you close the tab, everything is gone — nothing was ever kept.
What we optimize for
- Privacy by construction — not a policy promise, but an architecture where your file data literally never leaves your device.
- No friction — no accounts, no email capture, no artificial daily limits.
- Honesty about limits — we support a specific set of formats well (PDF, DOCX, XLSX, XLS, CSV, TSV, TXT, Markdown, and common image formats) rather than vaguely claiming to handle "anything." Where a conversion is inherently best-effort — like PDF to Word or PDF to Excel — we say so plainly instead of overpromising.
How it's funded
GoToPDF is free to use and supported by ads (Google AdSense). There's no premium tier, no paywall, and no plan to add one for the core conversion tool.
What's next
We're working on adding support for more formats client-side, including legacy .doc, .pptx, and .odt files, as reliable in-browser conversion techniques become available for them.
